Custom Tapered Wrap-Around EMI Shield Solution

PROBLEM

A defense company that had previously purchased Zipper-Mesh (VNH) EMI Shielding had modified their system and needed to adjust the associated shielding. One side of the cable run had an expanded connector junction area, increasing its diameter from 5.0 inches to 8.0 inches.

REQUIREMENTS

The customer needed to protect and shield the cables spanning these two areas with a wrap-around EMI shield that had a 5.0-inch inner diameter at one end, expanding to an 8.0-inch diameter at the other. The shielded sleeving needed to be 48.0 inches long and preferably have a uniform appearance. Additionally, the customer wanted to maintain the same EMI shielding performance and abrasion-resistant outer jacketing as their previous system.

SOLUTION

Custom EMI shield for defense cable system using Zippertubing's tapered Zipper-Mesh (VNH) design.

Custom Tapered Zipper-Mesh (VNH)

Zippertubing used 3D modeling software to determine the precise cut shape required to achieve the customer’s unique geometry. Once the shape was cut, the assembly proceeded using standard construction methods from the proven Zipper-Mesh family of mesh EMI shielding sleeves.

CONCLUSION

The defense contractor was satisfied with Zippertubing's ability to provide a custom design, accommodating system changes in a timely manner before their project began. This solution gave them confidence in achieving the same level of shielding they were accustomed to. Additionally, since Zippertubing used the same materials in the custom jacketing, no additional compliance testing was required, allowing the customer to maintain their project schedule.
